Research

Shockwave therapy has been studied extensively since the 1990s for a variety of chronic tendon, ligament, and soft tissue conditions. Across the scientific literature, the most commonly reported outcomes include reductions in pain, improvements in physical function, and enhanced quality of life.

Many studies have also demonstrated increased participation in work, sports, and everyday activities following treatment. In addition, imaging studies suggest that shockwave therapy may stimulate biological changes associated with tissue healing, including increased blood flow and improved tendon health.

While not every study has found statistically significant improvements, research consistently shows that shockwave therapy is a safe, low-risk treatment option, with very few reported complications and no evidence that treatment worsens the underlying condition (except in extremely rare scenarios).

Important Note: Individual results vary. The success of treatment depends on factors such as the condition being treated, how long symptoms have been present, the severity of the injury, and individual healing capacity. A thorough assessment is essential to determine whether shockwave therapy is the right option for you.

Biological effects of extracorporeal shockwave therapy in tendons: A systematic review

A systematic review is a type of research study that carefully collects and analyzes all of the available scientific evidence on a specific topic. Instead of relying on a single study, researchers review a high number of studies to determine what the overall body of evidence shows.

Think of it as a "study of studies." Researchers use a structured process to find, evaluate, and compare research to identify consistent findings and reduce bias.

They are considered one of the highest levels of scientific evidence and are often used to guide healthcare recommendations and treatment decisions.

Effectiveness and Safety of Shockwave Therapy in Tendinopathies

 

This is a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT).  In an RCT, participants are randomly assigned to different groups—typically a treatment group and a comparison (control) group. Think of it as a fair test where chance decides who receives the treatment and who does not, reducing the risk of bias.

 

 

RCTs are considered one of the strongest ways to evaluate a treatment because they help answer the question: Did the treatment actually cause the improvement?

 

By comparing outcomes between groups, researchers can better determine whether a treatment is effective, safe, and clinically meaningful.
